POLYSTYRENE
Styrofoam is a thermoplastic polymer valued for its transparency, workability, and cost-effectiveness. It is widely used in household items, packaging, and insulating components, thanks to its moderate resistance to acids and bases and its ability to be produced in various shapes.
It is divided into two types:
- HIPS is impact-resistant styrofoam, characterized by the presence of butadiene rubber, which gives the material greater strength.
- GPPS is crystal styrofoam, known for its transparency and gloss, but it is very fragile as it lacks rubber content.
POLYPROPYLENE
Polypropylene (PP) was discovered by Giulio Natta and Karl Ziegler in 1954, and its production was initiated by the Italian company Montecatini (later Montedison) under the brand name Moplen. It can be divided into two main types:
- Homopolymer PP: This material has excellent mechanical strength, rigidity, and thermal resistance, maintaining its properties up to 100°C. It finds applications in a wide range of sectors, including packaging, automotive components, and textiles, due to its ease of processing and chemical resistance.
- Copolymer PP: With the incorporation of ethylene into its molecular structure, this type offers better impact resistance at low temperatures compared to its homopolymer counterpart. It is used in applications requiring flexibility and resilience, such as food containers, appliance parts, and automotive components.
Polypropylene has gained significant success in the plastics industry; many everyday items, from doormats to dish drainers, are made from polypropylene. Other examples of its uses include car dashboards and bumpers, plastic bottle caps and labels, hail nets, coffee capsules, garden chairs and tables, plant pots, and much more.
ABS
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene combines strength and hardness, making it ideal for producing automotive parts, toys, and electronic devices. Its good workability and surface finish make it a preferred choice for applications that require both aesthetics and functionality.
